Lincoln once made the mistake of taking his bat-shit insane wife out with him to a troop inspection. Mary-Todd saw the wife of one of the other officers riding on a horse next to Lincoln’s and broke into a fit, refusing to be calmed, and then launching into another tirade at dinner over the affront to her station (she was riding behind in a coach at the time). Screeching and bawling in front of the other officers and troops, she insisted on retribution while Lincoln just sort of gently patted her and waited for the storms to subside.
