Hmmm… we didn’t mention that the girl was Kate Warne? The first female detective in the United States?
Well, she’ll turn up again later.
The important thing is that there isn’t much record of her life before she became a Pinkerton agent, so she might as well have been spying on Edgar Allen Poe in Baltimore.

I’ll leave the telling of the Kate Warne story to Geoff, he being the resident expert on these matters.
As to other matters, suffice it to say that I never QUITE convinced myself of the premise of The Purloined Letter…

So, it turns out the secret to the hiding place of the one weapon that could stand a chance against the Thoremerson is lurking somewhere in the vastly unbalanced mind of one Mr. Edgar Allen Poe. But how does one wring a dark secret from a Poe? The fine art of interrogation joins hands with the supple limbs of diplomacy in Episode 134: Quoth the Hoochfiend!!
– The Count and Geoff
When I was in Eighth Grade, as part of English class we listened to these tapes of crazy readings of Edgar Allen Poe stories.
The one that stood out the most was “The Cask of Amontillado.” Fortunado was sloshed and cheery, raving about the amontillado right up until his ass got chained up. Montresor was calm and creepy.
It remains my favorite Poe story.
“For the love of God, Montresor!”
“Yes, for the love of God!”
