For those who want to read more about the relative awesomeness of Freud and poserness of Jung, and who don’t have time to read Ernest Jones’s epic 3 volume Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, the next best thing is Kaufmann’s Freud, Adler, Jung, part of the Discovering the Mind trilogy he wrote towards the end of his life. The other books are well worth reading too, if for no other reason than to revel in the Kant smack talk. The Freud volume isn’t so much a biography as it is a series of articles aiming to demonstrate the basic honesty and rigorous insight of Freud as opposed to the bad faith and confusion of Adler and Jung. He set the record straight on a good many of the myths that Jung floated about Freud for his own advantage, and if you like the style, you can proceed right along to his Critique of Religion and Philosophy, which basically changed my life when I was in high school.
Geoff and I, accompanied by my daughter, some former students, and FtG spiritual guru Art, went to Wondercon as attendees this Saturday, and I haven’t even begun to sift through the stacks of webcomic compilations that I picked up. My daughter’s favorite moment was when we were able to get the original art to our favorite page from Elle Skinner’s It’s a Very Scribble Christmas, which is about the most charming book ever. We also stopped by Carpe Chaos and Minor Acts of Heroism to say hi and consume delightful merchandise, and Eric and Adriana and Kristen were as lovely and brimming as ever. Also found some new things, including Sorcery 101, Maximum Lifespan, Egg, and Bisclavret, which I’ll talk about a bit once I’ve had time to slow down and consume them, which won’t be for a while since…

It’s not necessary for a great French author to be a writer of erotica, but there are a NUMBER of them. Not just Guillaume Apollinaire, whose life was an act of erotic fiction in and of itself, but also the poet Alfred de Musset, Denis Diderot (you can say that the seduction scene in The Nun is there to serve the drama, I suppose), Anais Nin, George Bataille, Jean Genet, and Violette Leduc, among others. Drawing up a list of, say, German literary figures who also dabbled in erotica is a bit harder, and that’s probably for the best, as I don’t think any of us need to read what Franz Grillparzer found really hot.
