Since the Count is slacking on discussing ECCC, I will discuss things of note that I saw there. Now, these folks probably don’t need the eminently countable tens of people we can send their way, but I’ll give them shoutouts anyway:
The Geekerific crew is full of nice people that are fun to go drinking with.
I bought a CD from The Doubleclicks that I am finding to my liking.
Erika Moen was super nice. Both my wife and brother took one look at this artichoke print that she had and declared that they must own it no matter what the cost. I’m pulling for her to win the Penny Arcade Strip Search.
My own, “I must own this no matter what the cost,” moment came from Fez-O-Rama. They had a red velvet fez with a tiki on it that is now mine. It will match my smoking jacket perfectly.
I bought several new books from Ben Thompson of Badass of the Week. These books double as research for Frederick! Although, I don’t think I’ve worked anyone from them into the comic yet…
Lucas Elliott is from the old country (Alaska). Even though he is from Fairbanks and I am A-Rage ’til I die, he had some pretty sweet t-shirts.
I was able to very quickly tell Noelle Stevenson how much I like her comic, Nimona. This comic is great and everybody should be reading it.
We also had great conversations with everybody that stopped by the booth! Special thanks to Brittany Summers for chatting with us about all manner of things. It sure is great when people recognize us from past years.

There is a lot of choice to be had in Beethoven biographies out there. Starting at the beginning, you can get yourself the memoirs of Schindler or Breuning. And those are super fun if you want to feel for yourself what it was like for others to just be around him – not entirely reliable as to what Beethoven was actually all about, but even when they are deliberately massaging the facts (perhaps especially when) you can tell viscerally his impact on those he came across. More rigorous and easily my favorite is Thayer’s massive biography from the late 19th century (I want to say he wrote it from 1865 to 1886 or so… I could probably look that up for sure, but what fun is that?) It’s the biography that everything after has more or less cowered before, and for damn good reason.
Bringing us to Solomon, whose work on Beethoven became for many the standard late twentieth century biography. I actually like it a lot for the most part, especially once you get past Beethoven’s youth where Solomon is far more speculative, and get into some real historical sleuthing. The section where Solomon susses out the probable identity of the Immortal Beloved is a Whodunnit set piece of the first order that I enjoyed every minute of. But there’s no denying that he gets a little kooky when it comes to sandwiching Freud in wherever he can. My Solomon Beethoven drinking game was to take a shot every time he brought up Beethoven’s misremembering of his birth date as a sign of his Freudian father issues and deep-seated delusional impulses. There are some interesting things to be said on this front, but again, it gets to be a bit much. I read his Mozart biography some years back, and couldn’t finish it because it was sloshing about in the same waters, only with far less subtlety. Or maybe I was just less tolerant of it in my brash youth. I should really go back to that book some day, except for the fact that I finally found a Mozart biography I actually like, and it’s always tempting to just read that one for the third time instead of wading back into the morass.
Oh, right, I was supposed to talk more about ECCC here – which means I’m supposed to have read at least maybe two of the books I picked up from the con in order to review them a bit – which I haven’t – so I… won’t? Tuesday, I promise!! In the meantime, here is my sketch list! I just finished the first set of pencils today, and my goal is to get 4 done a day, so figuring that I’ll get the first batch inked and out tomorrow, Thursday the 7th, you can calculate when you should get yours!

Before talking a bit about our time at ECCC, I want to start by saying that John Searle is probably my favorite living philosopher – so what IS his dire purpose?
I think the first two tools in panel four are probably sussable, but for the third one I’ll let Heidegger do the explaining from his Question Concerning Technology essay: “Enframing means the gathering together of the setting-upon that sets upon man, i.e. challenges him forth, to reveal the actual, in the mode of ordering, as standing-reserve.” So, there you go!
We just got back late last night from the Emerald City Comic Con, and as usual it was a beautiful and lovely time… with occasional Prussians!
I am going to write about it, and the awesome stuff and people we found there, on Thursday when my brain is mostly back in my head and I’ve had a chance to read through this two foot high stack of stuff I brought back, but overall I want to say thank you to the lovely and wonderful people that made it such a fine time – to ueber minion Lauren, and delightful neighbor Ren Cummins, to the whole Trade Secrets Podcast crew, and as always to Art and Geoff for being fine fellow travelers. And most importantly, to the dozens of folks who came up to us and gave me some crazy thing to draw. To the 25 of you who are awaiting yours in the mail, I’ll have my order list up on Thursday so you’ll have a pretty good idea when to expect them then! Probably no earlier than Saturday but no later than two weeks from now! And to those who forgot to give me their address by con’s closing – you still can!
