I went over to Geoff’s the other day to help him pack up his miscellanea only to find him in front of his computer, AGONIZING over the Froot Piez slogan. It was a beautiful sight.
I don’t know what Nietzsche would have thought of the Fruit Pie. It makes no excuses for itself, and I think he would have respected that.
And now your Donnie Murphy Update:
Tuesday night Donnie Murphy went 2-for-4, and the children of America learned to believe in themselves again. Wednesday saw him at 1-for-4, raising his average to .236, bringing about the end of world hunger.

Frederick continues his super hero training this week at the heels of Lord Cardigan, the man who led the spectacularly disastrous but totally romantic Charge of the Light Brigade. Of course, being the fan of poetry that he is, Frederick lets a few things slip and, well, it really wasn’t that great of a charge anyway, right? It’s the third class, and it’s all about the Import of Bravery, right now at the ole ftg!
– The Count and Geoff
The Charge of the Light Brigade was not supposed to be anywhere near as Romantic (by which, of course, is meant “entirely disastrous”) as it was. It turned out that the dude giving the orders didn’t see the artillery between the Light Brigade and the enemy they were ordered to attack. So, in essence, Cardigan and his boys got beautifully and stirringly slaughtered by mistake. Oops. Still, it’s a pretty sweet poem:
Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns’ he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
‘Forward, the Light Brigade!’
Was there a man dismay’d ?
Not tho’ the soldier knew
Some one had blunder’d:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley’d & thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
Flash’d all their sabres bare,
Flash’d as they turn’d in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder’d:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro’ the line they broke;
Cossack & Russian
Reel’d from the sabre-stroke,
Shatter’d & sunder’d.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro’ the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder’d.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!
– Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
