And thus was a Zeitsgeschlaeger born. I’d like to keep looking at the early history of Allen and Paine, but next week we return to our main story, as we delve into a Paris divided between Antoinette and her surprising array of allies facing off against a handful of dedicated Revolutionaries, with the stakes being history as we know it! Will the monarchy reign anew or can Abe turn the tide? Join us in five short days!

We’ve talked about this before, but just to reiterate, Ethan Allen Furniture just named itself after EA because they thought he was cool, not because he was a renowned Furniture Whisperer. In real life, Ethan Allen divided his time between managing his massive estate, serving the American Revolution, and writing scathing pamphlets critiquing Christianity (this latter a habit he shared with Thomas Paine and, it turns out, the young Abe Lincoln!)
Or is there even the slightest bit of perhaps to the notion that he WAS a great man among the furniture peoples, but his assumption of the responsibilities of the Zeitsgeschlaeger so blotted out that life path that it took a century and a half for his proud work to resurface and receive the public recognition it deserves? Will we ever truly know?
