Some movies and TV shows use an orange wash plus solarization effect to suggest a desert climate or other harsh environmental conditions. I have a friend that refers to this phenomenon as the “Mexico City filter.”
I think I first heard him use this to refer to the Caprica stuff on ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ I can also immediately think of every scene that Benicio Del Toro appears in during the movie ‘Traffic.’
So, why is the sky in Mexico City orange? We are using the Mexico City filter.
