Jim Backus’s voice comes up in my internal thought processes an unnaturally common amount, so I suppose it was inevitable that, at some point, that voice would work its way into a hat. Here’s the man himself, making an Old Fashioned as it ought to be made, with the faint possibility of death looming in the background.

Rumford actually did establish and run for a number of years a museum devoted primarily to himself, though that was more out of necessity than design. It was to be a rotating display of industrial science, but as most scientists wanted to keep their inventions tightly under wraps for reasons of profit, the space ended up getting filled mainly with Rumford’s many innovations, including his way awesome chimney apparatus!
In conclusion, buy my new book!

Erzsebet Bathory (1560-1614) is known to us today mainly as the “Blood Countess” and, in spite of some very competent statesmanship and intellectual achievement, one still has to say that it probably doesn’t make up for all the murdering she, personally, took part in. She tortured and killed in secret hundreds of young victims. The tale goes that she used their blood as bathwater to defy aging, but that’s probably not terribly accurate. Still, it makes for a middling-to-good film, as 2009’s The Countess showed.
PT Barnum was the huckster of hucksters – his autobiography makes for delightful reading, if you get a chance – a glimpse of a scoundrel brain traveling through the wastelands of rural America, and finding a way to make massive amounts of money by bringing them something wild and improbable to make one day at least somewhat different from the next.

The founding of the Wonka Company is a part-charming, part-corporate tale. Film director Mel Stuart had a daughter, who loved the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book, and wanted her father to make it into a movie. So, he asked producer David L. Wolper what could be done, and Wolper saw the merchandising opportunity, so he struck a deal with Quaker Oats that they would get the candy rights to the Wonka name if they would finance the making of the movie. The company was sold to Nestle in 1988, and has been there ever since, a subsidiary of Sunmark, itself a subsidiary of Nestle, all of which screams old world charm. They do make a damn fine line of candies, though…

So, between putting the finishing touches on the book and performing in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Utopia, Ltd., Geoff needed to take a few weeks off from writing the Heist arc, so here, submitted for your approval, a small story from me about Count Rumford’s secret ops team, and how they cleaned up a mess from deep in Frederickverse history! Hope you enjoy it!
Count Rumford is one of the great scoundrels of history. A British spy during the American Revolution, he was also a shameless self-promoter who just happened to also be one of the most important practical physicists of his time. His mantra was efficiency, and in that capacity he worked for the Germans, creating model factories that provided education for children and nourishing meals for the unemployed at minimal cost, and then turned around and improved the material and design of the clothing, ovens, and munitions of the army. His systematic studies of the heat capacities of cloth, and the nutritive values of different foods, lead straight to the fundamental modern work of Ellen Swallow herself! Not bad for a scoundrel.

Geoff has some deep continuity stuff going on this episode. The Dirty Charlemagne and Peter’s wheelbarrow-o-good-times made their first appearance waaaaaay back in Episode 43, at a social gathering engineered by Erasmus.
The Dirtier Charlemagne then showed up about a year later in Episode 155 as a means of bribing Edgar Allen Poe to do something Terribly Heroic. And since then, I think it’s kept itself pretty much on the down low. If you can remember another instance of the Dirty Charlemagne as an important plot point, write to us at TheScholars@ftg-comic.com!
